It’s a reasonable question, isn’t it? Does who you are and why you use social media really impact how important it is to you? I think the answer is obviously yes, but when you try to capture something so complex, so organic as social media, you really exit the realm of deterministic thinking and enter a world where expectations, goal-orientation, and preconception are the norm. Everything needs to be qualified, because there really aren’t any rules. Or are there?

I’ll talk a little about Twitter, since that’s the newest big social kid on the block. Millions of people are on Twitter, tweeting to their heart’s content, and millions of people that don’t tweet wonder what all the fuss is about. If you recall, the same sort of thing happened with Facebook and MySpace before Twitter. And again with Blogging before that. And with email lists, IRC, and web forums before that. All the way back to primitive peoples sharing stories around a crackling fire, there have been those who ask, “What’s the big deal with fire anyway?”

All the way back to primitive peoples sharing stories around a crackling fire, there have been those who ask, “What’s the big deal with fire anyway?”

I’ll tell you what the deal is.

It’s not the technology, it’s us.

All through history, people have had this need to connect, to create community, to share their ideas, thoughts, fears, and hopes with others. We want – we need – those connections, just like we need food and water, and even air to breathe. People are nothing if not social animals, and if you’re surprised that now, in the early 21st century people have discovered new and empowering forms of social media, then you just haven’t been paying attention. We have always found new forms of social media, ever since the dawn or symbolic thought and our ability to share stories and ideas through language. I also suspect that we will always create new ways to do so.

And there will always be those who wonder what all the fuss is about.

So, I believe that social media is much like any other form of community – and you tend to get out of it what you put in. Maybe that’s the only rule, and that’s why people talk about twitter and Facebook karma. If you’re a prick to your neighbors, do they invite you to their big 4th of July cookout? If you play nice in your virtual communities, then maybe you get nice back.

In any event, you have to join in to participate – and that’s just the beginning of the fun.

The first thing on my list was to make a couple updates to the SmugBaldy blog. I often check the site on my iPhone, and with the amount of content that I have there, the tiny iPhone safari browser doesn’t really work for me. In addition, I wanted to make it as easy as possible for iPhone users to navigate the blog, and that’s where WPTouch comes in.

Like all WP plug-ins, installation was a snap, in just a few minutes after downloading, I was treated to an iPhone friendly interface on my blog. The WPTouch plugin automatically detects a connection from an iPhone or iPod touch and reformats your WordPress blog to use a theme that is compliant with the iPhone interface guidelines.

All in all – very cool stuff.

If YouTube views were votes, then we’d be talking about President Barak Obama, and how he beat John McCain by a whopping 50 million votes. Below is a screenshot of the YouTube politician channel, and as you can see, Obama has over 1100 videos with over 54 million views to McCain’s 216 videos with just 3.7 million views. Indeed, Obama has three times as many videos and almost ten times the number of views as Republican internet sensation Ron Paul.

Obviously YouTube views aren’t really votes, and it’s not really clear how, or even if, they’ll somehow translate into votes. Obama’s success on YouTube does, however, illustrate the fact that Obama, much more than McCain, has an effective strategy to leverage social media sites like YouTube and Facebook to get his message out, and that very well could translate into more votes come election day.

Take, for example, Brian Stelter’s interesting article in the New York Times yesterday about the new media strategy of the Obama campaign:

The campaign’s new-media strategy, inspired by popular social networks like MySpace and Facebook, has revolutionized the use of the Web as a political tool, helping the candidate raise more than two million donations of less than $200 each and swiftly mobilize hundreds of thousands of supporters before various primaries.

The centerpiece of it all is My.BarackObama.com, where supporters can join local groups, create events, sign up for updates and set up personal fund-raising pages. “If we did not have online organizing tools, it would be much harder to be where we are now,” Mr. Hughes said.

What we see here is that the Obama campaign is doing more than just taking the internet seriously. They’re making it an integral part of their media apparatus. They’re staffing their web team with savvy professionals, and funding it as if victory depended on it. If this trend continues, and if the Obama campaign can somehow translate all the social media juice into tangible action in the voting booth, you can expect every future campaign to learn the lesson: Rather than simply a tool for poking your friends or for niche marketing, social media outlets can play a key role in selecting the President of the United States of America. And to me, that prospect is simply amazing.

I saw this comment on a religious blog, and thought I’d give it some more room here. This was made in response to a favorable review of Ben Stein’s movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed:

ID isn’t really scientific and its detractors are correct to say so. However, evolution is completely neutered by LOGIC, which needs no bunsen burner or laboratory. I’ve been told that complex enzymes existed on comets and that’s where life came from. The proponents of this never seem to be concerned that a ‘complex enzyme’ has to have an origin, too. The mental gymnastics needed for faith in evolution pump up the pride of the ’scientists’ who espouse it. The wisdom of the world is indeed foolish.

Such hand-waving assertion that LOGIC (in all caps, no less) neuters evolution or that scientists have “faith” in evolution are great examples of why we need to have intelligent conversation about what science is and how it operates. Unfortunately, movies like Expelled do more to cloud the issue and polarize people with its dishonest caricature of science, scientists, and even ID.

That evolution occurred and continues to occur is indisputable fact. To deny this is to deny converging evidence from not only the the fossil record , but also from observations of chemical and anatomical similarities of related life forms, from the geographic distribution similar species, from documented genetic changes in organisms over many generations, and from specific predictions the theory makes which have been observed.

That Darwin’s theory of evolution, since its inception, has withstood intense scientific and popular criticism, and yet remains the current best explanation for the diversity of life on earth is also indisputable fact. Science has a way of dealing with bad theories if they fail to measure up: they are replaced by better theories.

One might ask, then, “What characteristics would a replacement for Darwin’s Theory of Evolution have to possess?”

Here are some must have’s:

Falsifiability: Any potential replacement for Evolutionary theory would itself have to be able to be proven false. Evolution is indeed falsifiable: It requires an old Earth , it operates at the level of genetic material to transform species over time (sometimes, geological time scales), and it predicts that certain species that exist now did not exist earlier. As Haldane said, “Fossil rabbits in the Precambrian” would pretty much toss Evolution into the bin.

Explanatory Power: Any replacement for Evolution would have to explain everything that evolution does, and it would have to simultaneously explain observations that Evolution could not explain. So, if we were to find rabbit fossils in Precambrian strata, then the new Theory would have to account for that as well.

Simplicity: Evolution has essentially one mechanism to account for the diversity of life: Natural Selection. Any theory that has a hope of replacing evolutionary theory would similarly have to rest upon the operation of a natural (as opposed to supernatural)
process.

Note that Intelligent Design possesses none of these qualities. It is not falsifiable, and in invoking a supernatural agent as it’s underlying causal agent, its explanatory power approaches zero since any irreducibly complex designer can do anything it wants by waving it’s irreducibly complex hands about.

And hand-waving is something we want in only small quantities, especially in science.

ABC News is reporting that the section titled “Family Recipes” on John McCain’s official campaign site also appeared verbatim on the FoodNetwork.com website.

The recipes in question – including Ahi Tuna with Napa Cabbage Slaw, Passion Fruit Mousse, and Farfalle Pasta with Turkey Sausage, Peas and Mushrooms — were all credited on the website to McCain’s wife Cindy. Another recipe also appears to be very similar to a recipe of TV personality and chef Rachael Ray.

Not wanting to offend anyone, the McCain campaign decided not to pursue legal action against The Food Network for it’s blatant theft of the cherished McCain family recipes, but instead chose a course of honor, and fired one of its own gifted young interns, 62 year-old Brendon McSwipy of Scottsdale.

The Food Network, home of several famously popular cooking shows including Ciao America with Mario Batali, and Good Eats with Alton Brown, has once again been caught wielding its near monopoly power in the TV-Food world for evil. Rather than hire their own chefs and create original recipes, their operatives we able to break into the McCain family kitchen compound in Phoenix, and abscond with a treasure-trove of McCain cooking history.

Take for instance Mark Laymon’s recent experiment on the Collective Thoughts blog. In a fairly short post about how dandelions evoke fond memories of his childhood, Mark also does his bit to spread some social dandelion seeds himself:

The Collective Thoughts blog is about Social Media. Social Media to me is about using interactive elements of a website to get your proposed message across. What better way of getting into someones head then to let them see a little bit into your own mind. It is all about how you build your rapport.

Mark then goes on to request readers to imagine their own favorite flower, to reconnect with why it’s their favorite, and to then write a review of his post on stumbleupon. Yeah, I did all that, but what would motivate me to actually take time out of my increasingly busy life to review this guy’s post?
The answer is quite simple – he didn’t just ask for a link. Instead – he gave me something of value first. It might be that his simple effort to actively connect with his readers made me stop and think for a moment: What was my favorite flower?

And there it was – all internet marketing copywriting wisdom rolled up into one simple concept: write something sincere for your readers, and they might do something for you. He wasn’t asking me to buy anything, just imagine my favorite flower – and that’s all it takes to plant the seed in someone’s mind.

BTW, I really like sweet olive blossoms – they’re so tiny but smell amazing.

Poise. Style. Polish. Class. Selflessness. Sacrifice. Grace. Tactfulness. Decency. Humility.

Hillary Clinton?

Got you, didn’t I. These aren’t the adjectives that immediately come to mind when I think of Hillary Clinton, and chances are they aren’t the first that pop into your head either. These are, however, some of the words that we’d all be using to describe Hillary if she were to read the writing on the wall, and bow out gracefully from her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Imagine the upheaval to the political landscape, the glassy-eyed stares of dumbfounded political wonks, the slack-jawed expression on the faces of her most ardent detractors that would result if Hillary were to postpone her quest for the White House, and unify the Democratic Party behind the clear favorite: Barak Obama.

Now, I’m obviously not the first to suggest that Hillary should bow out. Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter, among others beat me to the punch:

The choice before her is to go down ugly with a serious risk of humiliation at the polls, or to go down classy, with a real chance of redemption.

The redemption Alter speaks of is the redeeming quality of self-sacrifice. Everyone knows Hillary wants this nomination so bad she can taste it, but if she were to put her own desires aside for the good of her party, and the good of the country she obviously loves, then why not opt for a graceful exit and maximize the chances of seating a Democratic president in November? March 4th in Ohio and Texas may be the tipping point – where Hillary Clinton either scrambles back into the race with Obama, or where the odds against her become incalculable.

I know what the Republicans want, and I hope Hillary spikes that volleyball instead.

You got to know when to fold ‘em.

You’re surrounded by Ghost Whisperers, Allison DuBuois, and freaky kids seeing dead people, so it’s only (super)natural to ask yourself, “Hey, could I be psychic?”

Take our little test and find out if you have a hidden psychic ability. Have any of these things ever happened to you?

You’ve lost your keys more than once, and every time you find them in the last place you look.

You have ever asked yourself, “Who could that be?”, or bother to look at Caller ID when the phone rings.

You suspect people are talking about you behind you back, but you don’t know who, nor what they’re saying.

You advertise your “Amazing Psychic Reading” business rather than calling your future customers before they call you.

You hear ghostly voices that command you to do horrible things to your coworkers with a teaspoon full of sugar and a crowbar, but an aluminum foil hat makes the voices shut the hell up.

You had a dream about the sun coming up and then it happened almost exactly as you dreamed it would.

You had a shiver run down your spine when you picked up the phone right before it rang. As it turns out, you pick up the phone a lot, and there’s often just a dial tone waiting on the other side.

You have ever been surprised by the ending of an episode of Law and Order. (For the more geriatric readers – if Murder She Wrote ever stumped you.)

You flipped a coin over and over and once got heads five times in a row.

You ever got less than 100% on a multiple choice test.

You think that if Sylvia Browne can do it, you can too, all the while forgetting that Sylvia is a fake.

You started out writing a “Top 10 List” and wound up with 12 items instead.

If you answer yes to any of the above, sorry, you’re a clod like the rest of us. You have no psychic ability at all. If you’re in this camp, you can proudly use this in your blog to display your normalcy.

If you answered yes to all of them, you’re just like Sylvia Browne: You still have no psychic ability, but are instead quite the freaky freaky weirdo. Here’s your badge:
