Too funny!

I think when it comes to conspiracy theories and crackpot assertions, psychology plays a huge role.  People suddenly take a personal interest in the subject for whatever reason and because of this it's damn near impossible to let go.  Suddenly when someone challenges your thoughts you are forced to reach for every piece of bullshit you can conjure up till you're left saying, "Whatever, let the government control your thoughts..."  Or some other cooky phrase.
